This is a wedding cake I created for a friend’s wedding that was supposed to be a simple, traditional wedding cake. While that didn’t turn out to be the case, I am proud of the final product, and it won first place in the category of the most creative wedding cake.
The wedding cake is one of those things that seems to be a staple of weddings. It is also one of those things that is often overlooked, but has a lot of potential for creative use. One reason is that a wedding cake uses up a lot of materials and labor. So while the cake itself is pretty straightforward, the icing, frosting, and all the work it takes to make it look good are usually left up to creative embellishment.
The wedding cake has a lot of advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, it can be a lot of fun to decorate. Plus it is the ultimate statement of love. On the other hand, it is one of those things that comes with a lot of potential for injury. For instance, the wedding cake is designed to be eaten by the bride and her parents, so it is likely to fall on the floor and break into pieces.
Not only does frosting have a lot of potential for breakage and injury, it can also be very messy. When the cake is decorated, the frosting comes into contact with the food or other confectionery, which can actually cause it to break apart or give a bad taste to the guests.
I had this happen to me just the other day. Our wedding venue was a wedding cake store, and the frosting that I brought to the event was the wrong consistency. It was the consistency that the cake store owner used, which was much less prone to getting smashed. The other possible culprits might have been the eggs, the fact that the cake was just not the right consistency, or even the fact that the cake itself was not the right consistency. In any case, the fact that the cake was the problem is why you should always make sure your cake is the right consistency, even if you think you’re making a mistake.

If you’re making a cake on the scale of a cake, it should be the consistency of a cake that is just right. It’s not like cake mix, it’s not like cake decorating. Cake decorating involves pouring batter into a pan, then stirring with a spatula until it is just right. Its impossible to tell if its a cake or a cake mix, but it really needs to be more cake like. Its just not even close.
