In a duplex the master lives in the master bedroom while the other one lives in the guest bedroom. The master bedroom is just a big room with no windows or doors. In one of my previous jobs, the office had a separate office for each floor and a master bedroom for each floor. The people in the upstairs rooms live in a separate apartment. These apartments have a separate entrance for each floor and each apartment is not connected with the rest of the house.
This situation is not unique to apartment living, but duplexes are a fairly common housing situation. I think if you’re doing it right you can have the separation you need from other members of your family while leaving the privacy you need from other people, but I think it’s a really good idea to keep it simple and don’t get too crazy with your design decisions.
