The biggest obstacle to graphic design jobs is the amount of work it takes to get a new job. There are various reasons why. Maybe you are just not good at your job and want to move on. Maybe you have some sort of disability, a family member, or a spouse who needs to work. Maybe you have a spouse that is still on the market. Whatever the reason, the amount of work it takes to get a job is the biggest factor in the hiring process.
I have some friends who have a family member that is in the same situation as myself, but they’re good at their job and they have been able to land their job the same day. They’re good at their job because it comes so easily to them. They have no excuses for why they can’t get a job.
A friend of mine and I were discussing our work schedules this morning. We all agreed that if we had to work 9-5, we would all be on the same page of “why dont we do something exciting and try to get that job”. It wouldnt matter how or why. If we had to work 9-5, we would all give up on trying to find a job, and just work for the pay.
It’s not about the job. It’s about what you do that makes you happy. If you don’t enjoy what you do, if you always have to work 7-5, you will never be excited about trying to be a designer. And if you never work 9-5 because you want a job, you will never enjoy what you do with your life.
Some designers are creative because they like what they do. Some are not. I would go so far as to say that anyone who works in graphic design for a living is not an artist. But it doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be excited about their job. The job itself, being a designer, can be exciting because of who you are.
My best friend, Jason, is a designer for a company called XSeedworks. Jason is also the creator of the popular app Stylist. He is a designer and a creator. I think everyone should be an artist or a designer, but it dont mean you should have to work 6 days a week.
I love my job and I love the people I work with. But I have to ask, if you have a passion for fashion that you do it for a living, what is next up on your agenda? Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure I’d be quite lost without my job. I can’t see going back to school to major in art and design because I would be too busy.
Well, if your job is you have to do it for a living and you are tired of having to live under your desk, then maybe you should consider another profession. This is especially true if you can find a job that is more flexible than doing the same task every day.
That said, you can always create your own thing. I have an entry level job working as a graphic designer at a small local shop and I do it for the same reasons as the rest of you. They pay me a pretty good wage, I love it, and I get to work with great people. I can make a great living now without having to work for someone else.
Graphic design makes up around 5% of the overall design industry, so it’s definitely a viable career option. That said, it’s not for everyone. It’s a challenging profession that requires a lot of art, design, and design thinking. It also tends to be very time consuming. Graphic designers take on a lot of work, and it’s usually a case of working on a big project for a long period of time before getting a paycheck.
