A good design process will take the time to look at the big picture. It should not, however, distract you from making changes to the smaller things in the process. In a sequential design process, we make the changes to the small things first, then the big things, and then we do the work that we need to do. This approach produces results that are better, faster, and more efficient.
In our new game design process we are taking a step back and doing a lot of design work to get the details right. We are building a system in which we can iterate and refine in real time. In the beginning of a new game we will be designing with a team that will be able to iterate, refine, and get the right things done.
After we get feedback, we will build on the system and make changes. We will iterate with a small team, and iterate with a larger team.
