The acronym “AK” stands for Avtomat Kalashnikova which was a name that Mikhail Kalashnikov gave to his rifle design while he still worked at Izhmash and before it became known as just an assault rifle. The word “Kalashnikov” derives from two Russian words; kalaschnikov (meaning ‘small arms’) and imia Mihailovicha Kalasha (the last name of its inventor). In 1947 the Soviets developed their own new military Mosin Nagant rifle, which replaced the older weapons. This rifle was called an Avtomat Kalashnikova Skladnoy Nagantem (AKS-47).
The AK 47 is a gas operated, selective fire rifle that uses weight to balance and lightens weapon load by carrying some of its parts in two halves—a strong steel receiver cover with integrated magazine well for ammunition and stamped sheet metal upper assembly housing barrel group including charging handle mechanism. The original design had a muzzle brake on the end of the barrel but this proved unnecessary when other designs were tested as it compensated for recoil automatically without needing any compensator device at all.

The AK 47 is a select fire weapon which means that it can be used in two modes, semi and fully automatic.
This was one of the first weapons to use both gas operation as well as recoil operated systems making it more reliable than other designs at the time.””`’It also has an oil tempered receiver for increased durability.'”‘: The rifle’s design makes extensive use of inexpensive steel stamping techniques in its production so much so that using sheet metal workers from automobile plants gave Kalashnikov enough experience with mass production methods to start producing cars after he retired from military service.
There are different variations such as barrel length, stock types (fixed or adjustable) and pistol grips but all have certain features including: safety -A good Ak 47 is worth its weight in gold. -The AK47 was influenced by the M1941 Johnson rifle, which was used during WWII.
